Honing your Video Title and Thumbnails

Imagine if Shakespeare had named his play “A Retiree with a Mood” instead of “King Lear.” Your titles and thumbnails are your first—and often last—chance to grab a potential subscriber’s attention.

  • Choose titles that are clear, catchy, and searchable.

The National Football League (NFL) announced on Thursday, May 11 its 18-week, 272-game regular-season schedule for 2023, which runs from September 7, 2023 through January 7, 2024.

The NFL’s 104th season begins with the league’s annual primetime kickoff game, as the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs host the Detroit Lions at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday, September 7 (8:20 PM ET, NBC). The Lions finished the 2022 regular season with wins in eight of their final 10 games while the Chiefs won each of the final eight games last season, including the playoffs.

Week 1 continues Sunday, September 10, with a double-doubleheader featuring four Sunday afternoon games in every market. On CBS at 4:25 PM ET, two 2022 playoff teams meet as the Miami Dolphins visit the Los Angeles Chargers, the Las Vegas Raiders travel to the Denver Broncos in an AFC West showdown and the Philadelphia Eagles visit the New England Patriots in a rematch of Super Bowls XXXIX and LII. On Fox at 4:25 PM ET, the two teams with the most regular-season wins in NFL history – the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears – meet at Soldier Field to renew their rivalry while the Los Angeles Rams travel to the Seattle Seahawks in a rematch of their thrilling Week 18 overtime contest that helped the Seahawks secure a 2022 playoff berth.

Later that day, NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” begins with the Dallas Cowboys visiting the New York Giants (8:20 PM ET), in a matchup between NFC East divisional rivals and 2022 playoff teams. NBC will televise one game each Sunday night in Weeks 1-15 and Week 17. On Saturday in Week 16, NBC will feature the Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers (4:30 PM ET) while Peacock will exclusively stream the Buffalo Bills at the Los Angeles Chargers at 8:00 PM ET.

Kickoff Weekend concludes on Monday, September 11, with ESPN/ABC’s “Monday Night Football,” featuring Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets hosting Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills (8:15 PM ET) in an AFC East showdown.

ESPN will televise 16 games this season (one game each Monday night in Weeks 1-15 and Saturday night in Week 17) and will be simulcast on ABC in Weeks 1, 11 and 17, including the Super Bowl LVII rematch between Philadelphia and Kansas City on Monday, November 20. In Weeks 2, 3 and 14, there will be two Monday night games on ESPN and ABC. In Weeks 2 and 3, the two Monday night games broadcast at 7:15 PM ET and 8:15 PM ET. In Week 14, the two Monday night games will both kickoff at 8:15 ET, as Tennessee visits Miami (ESPN) and the New York Giants host Green Bay (ABC). In Week 16, ABC will broadcast the conclusion of the NFL’s Christmas Day triple-header between Baltimore and San Francisco (8:15 PM ET). There will be no Monday night game on the final regular-season weekend (Week 18) to provide more flexibility for the scheduling of the opening weekend of the NFL playoffs.

Additionally, ESPN/ABC will air two games with playoff implications on the Saturday of Week 18, January 6, at 4:30 PM ET and 8:15 PM ET. These games will be selected following the conclusion of Week 17.

“Thursday Night Football” will air exclusively on Prime Video, kicking off its slate in Week 2 as the Philadelphia Eagles host the Minnesota Vikings (8:15 PM ET). Prime Video will broadcast 15 Thursday Night Football games between Weeks 2-17 (excluding Thanksgiving night) and exclusively stream the first-ever NFL Black Friday game when the New York Jets host the Miami Dolphins in Week 12 (3:00 PM ET).

NFL Network will exclusively televise eight games – four international games, three games in Week 15 on Saturday, December 16 and the New England Patriots visiting the Denver Broncos on Sunday, December 24 (8:15 PM ET).

The NFL schedule features five international regular-season games – three in the United Kingdom and two in Germany, marking the first-ever regular-season NFL games to be hosted in Frankfurt. As part of the League’s expansion of the regular season to 17 games, it was determined that, beginning with the 2022 season, up to four of the teams from the conference whose teams were eligible for a ninth regular-season home game would instead be designated to play a neutral-site international game each year.

The international slate features games in three consecutive weeks, beginning in London at Wembley Stadium in Week 4 with a matchup between Jacksonville and Atlanta (9:30 AM ET, ESPN+). The London action shifts to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium the next two weeks, as Jacksonville and Buffalo meet in Week 5 (9:30 AM ET, NFL Network) and Tennessee and Baltimore face off in Week 6 (9:30 AM ET, NFL Network). The Jaguars are scheduled to become the first NFL team to play two regular-season games outside of the United States in the same season.

As part of the League’s commitment to playing regular-season games in Germany, the NFL will play two games in 2023 at Frankfurt Stadium – home of Eintracht Frankfurt, having played the inaugural Germany game last season in Munich. In Week 9, Kansas City takes on Miami (9:30 AM ET, NFL Network) and in Week 10, Indianapolis meets New England (9:30 AM ET, NFL Network) to wrap up the 2023 international games.

The Madden Thanksgiving Celebration will feature a tripleheader on Thursday, November 23, with three divisional matchups. The first game will feature a pair of NFC North foes, as the Packers travel to Detroit to face the Lions (12:30 PM ET, FOX). The late afternoon game will match two NFC East rivals, as the Washington Commanders visit the Dallas Cowboys (4:30 PM ET, CBS). The Thanksgiving Day festivities conclude with an NFC West divisional matchup as the 49ers travel to Seattle to face the Seahawks on NBC (8:20 PM ET).

Week 16 begins with Thursday Night Football on December 21, followed by two games on NBC and Peacock on Saturday, December 23. The slate continues on Sunday, December 24 with 10 games and concludes on Monday, December 25, with the second-ever Christmas tripleheader. The Christmas Day tripleheader features Las Vegas at Kansas City at 1:00 PM ET (CBS), the New York Giants at Philadelphia at 4:30 PM ET (FOX) and Baltimore at San Francisco at 8:15 PM ET (ABC).

The regular season will conclude with Week 18 on Saturday, January 6, and Sunday, January 7. For the 14th consecutive year, all 16 games scheduled for the final week of the season are division contests, enhancing the potential for more games with playoff ramifications.

The NFL’s 32 teams will each play 17 games over 18 weeks. Byes will begin in Week 6 and end in Week 14.

Twenty-three games will be Super Bowl rematches, including each of the past two Super Bowls: Philadelphia at Kansas City (Week 11, Super Bowl LVII) and the Los Angeles Rams at Cincinnati (Week 3, Super Bowl LVI).

Fourteen 2023 games are rematches from the 2022 playoffs, including Super Bowl LVII, both Championship Games (San Francisco at Philadelphia in Week 13; Cincinnati at Kansas City in Week 17) and all four Divisional playoff games (Kansas City at Jacksonville in Week 2; Buffalo at Cincinnati in Week 9, the New York Giants against Philadelphia in Weeks 16 and 18; Dallas at San Francisco in Week 5).

The two most recent winners of the Most Valuable Player award, Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers, are scheduled to face off for the first time in their careers when the Kansas City Chiefs visit the New York Jets on Sunday Night Football in Week 4 (8:20 PM ET, NBC). Should both players start, Mahomes (two-time MVP) and Rodgers (four-time MVP) would become the seventh different pair of quarterbacks to meet in a regular-season game after both players had won multiple NFL Most Valuable Player awards.

The top-two picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud, are scheduled to meet in Week 8 when the Carolina Panthers host the Houston Texans (1:00 PM ET, FOX). Should both players start, it would mark the fifth game in NFL history between rookie starting quarterbacks selected with first and second overall picks in the NFL Draft.

 

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING: The NFL will continue to use “flexible scheduling” this season to ensure exciting and meaningful games are available for viewing by the largest number of fans. Flexible scheduling will be expanded from prior seasons, including to late season weeks of Monday Night Football. (Up-to-date information about “flexible scheduling” for the 2023 season)

As in prior seasons, for Week 18, the final weekend of the season, the scheduling of the Saturday, Sunday afternoon, and the Sunday night games is not assigned. In Week 18, two games will be played on Saturday (4:30 PM ET and 8:15 PM ET) with the remainder to be played on Sunday afternoon (1:00 PM ET and 4:25 PM ET) and one matchup to be played on Sunday night (8:20 PM ET). Specific dates, start times, and networks for Week 18 matchups will be determined and announced following the conclusion of Week 17.

The NFL is the only sports league that presents all regular-season and postseason games on free, over-the-air television in local markets. All postseason games are televised nationally.

PLAYOFFS: Introduced in 2020 and continuing for a fourth-consecutive year, a total of 14 teams – seven each in the American and National Football Conferences – will make the postseason. The No. 1 seed in each conference will receive a bye in the Wild Card round. The remaining division champions in each conference with the best records will be seeded 2, 3, and 4, followed by the next three teams per conference with the best records seeded 5, 6, and 7.

Since 1990 – a streak of 33 consecutive seasons – at least four new teams have qualified for the playoffs that missed the postseason the year before, including seven of the 14 playoff teams in 2022.

AFC and NFC Wild Card games will feature the 2 seed hosting the 7 seed, the 3 seed hosting the 6 seed and the 4 seed hosting the 5 seed.

Super Wild Card Weekend presented by Verizon for the 2023 season will feature six games, starting on Saturday, January 13.

Wild Card winners join the top seeds in each conference in the Divisional Playoffs on Saturday and Sunday, January 20-21. The AFC and NFC Championship Games will be played on Sunday, January 28. The winners meet two weeks later on Sunday, February 11, in Super Bowl LVIII at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium (CBS), marking the first time the league’s final game will be played in Las Vegas.

“Vlad & Niki,” an imaginative and immensely popular preschool YouTube series The live-action series which follows the hilarious antics of two young brothers – ten-year-old Vlad and seven-year-old Niki Vashketov – has just surpassed an impressive 95 million subscribers on their English language channel.   

Programming Insider had a chance to speak with Denys Sokoriev, Content Production and Operations Manager for Trend Media, LLC, the production company behind “Vlad & Niki,” about how he creates the series’ magic.    

The global YouTubers now have 21 YouTube channels that are translated into 18 languages and began streaming in March 2022 on HBO Max. 

“Only a handful of YouTube creators get even close to these numbers,” enthused Sokoriev. “We are usually in the top 5 streamed channels in the United States and recently received more than 460 million views for one of our videos!”

Sokoriev loves the collaborative creative process working with the Vashketov family.   

“The great thing about working with Sergey and Victoria – Vlad & Niki’s parents – is that they are very inclusive with my team and I. When there is such a collaborative working environment, you are able to come up with fresh and exciting ideas, which makes work fun. We get to take ordinary ideas and make them extraordinary for kids all over the world!” 

Originally from Krivyi Rih, Ukraine, Sokoriev moved to Poland and worked in furniture design and construction, which allowed him to explore his passion for designing, creating and building objects. 

“This prepared me for the work I do now – overseeing the production and sets for content creators. After my time in Poland, I moved to Dubai, UAE, where I worked in accounting and content production, leading me to work on ‘Vlad & Niki.’ My unique set of experiences made me a perfect fit for the work I now do in visual entertainment,” he said proudly.

It seems like it was fate that brought Sokoriev to the Vashtekovs! 

“They were living in Dubai at the same time I was, and I met them through my work for a different content production company. Their channel was becoming very successful at the time, and so Sergey and Victoria started thinking about strategies to help them further the content creation.”

Because the couple could see the channel was getting too big for them to produce themselves, they decided to grow their team, Sokoriev noted.

“I got to know them personally; since they were looking for people to work directly with their children, they absolutely needed trustworthy people. I am so grateful they felt I was a right fit for their team.”

So far, it’s been an amazing adventure for Sokoriev to be a part of. 

“I have coordinated  shoots for filming in unique locations like Dubai, The Bahamas, Mexico, Vail, Colorado and The Maldives. When we are shooting on-location, we primarily use practical locations, so there’s not much building involved. We shoot most of the content in and around their home in the Miami area, so that’s where most of the set production actually happens.”

They also shoot content at places such as water parks, amusement centers, museums, farms – places that real kids go to with their parents, Sokoriev added.

“We want the content to look imaginative, creative, and larger than life filled with  educational elements of learning, sharing and kindness. I oversee planning and coordinating the filming logistics in the different locations where we make content. It’s not always easy to shoot in far-away places; still, the on-location content always looks amazing!”

Sokoriev has thoroughly enjoyed his job, and is thrilled he is a part of the experience of making kids laugh all day long.

“I absolutely love storytelling, producing and designing. Since I was a small boy, I have had an affinity for tinkering and building things, so producing fun props and sets we feature in the videos is a childhood dream come true! If you watch them, you immediately understand the ‘Vlad & Niki’ brand, which is vibrant and exciting. Although sometimes it’s a challenge to bring big ideas to life, it’s never boring and makes it exciting every day.”

There are many stories and sets Sokoriev has been involved with–one favorite is the “Four Colors Playhouse Challenge,” where they had to design a vision that included building an elaborate and vibrant practical life-size imaginative house,” Sokoriev said. “The video has proved very popular, with more than 462 million views on the English Channel alone!

Another fun story that Sokoriev enjoyed producing was for the Airplane challenge with Vlad and Niki episode.

“Once we wrote the storyline, we started creating functioning sets, including designing a prop airplane and incorporating special effects. Everyday we are working to create content that resonates with kids and families all over the world. For me, ‘Vlad & Niki’ is like making blockbuster movies that continue to engage, entertain and teach and hopefully inspire our audience!”

The National Football League today (on Dec. 22, 2022) announced a multi-year agreement with Google granting YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels the right to exclusively distribute NFL Sunday Ticket to consumers in the United States starting with the 2023 NFL season.

The Wall Street Journal‘s Joe Flint and Miles Kruppa first broke this story. The report details that YouTube is licensing the residential rights for seven years. Those rights are valued at approximately $2 billion per season and could increase if certain benchmarks are reached.

NFL Sunday Ticket is popular in bars and restaurants; the NFL will also seek to license the commercial rights for those establishments for an additional $200 million.

We’re excited to bring NFL Sunday Ticket to YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels and usher in a new era of how fans across the United States access, watch and follow the NFL,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “For a number of years we have been focused on increased digital distribution of our games and this strategic partnership is yet another example of us looking towards the future and building the next generation of NFL fans.

Starting next season (in 2023), NFL Sunday Ticket will be available on two of YouTube’s growing subscription businesses as an add-on package on YouTube TV and standalone a-la-carte on YouTube Primetime Channels.

Consisting of all out-of-market Sunday regular-season NFL games (based on viewer’s location) broadcast on Fox and CBS, NFL Sunday Ticket allows fans in the United States the ability to follow all their favorite teams and players no matter where they live.

Updated NFL Sunday Ticket product features and functionality will be announced ahead of the 2023 NFL season.

DirecTV, which has had exclusive rights to Sunday Ticket since 1994, was paying a $1.5 billion annual fee to the NFL to carry Ticket but had reportedly been losing about $500 million per year on the package. The satellite service, which still transmits Amazon’s “Thursday Night Football” to bars and restaurants, currently has a subscriber base of 13.5 million, down seven million since 2017, amidst the ongoing trend of cord-cutting.

The NFL and Google have been partners since the League first launched its official NFL channel on YouTube in 2015. Since then, the NFL YouTube channel has grown to more than 10 million subscribers who enjoy clips, highlights, game-day compilations and exclusive original content series like “NFL Follies” and NFL Films’ two-time Emmy winning flagship series “Gameday All-Access”, a mic’d up players show bringing fans inside the huddle and on the sidelines for exclusive access during the game.

Since 2015, the NFL’s presence on YouTube has increased to include channels for all 32 NFL clubs, as well as ten official League channels including NFL Films, NFL Network, and the NFL’s Hispanic channel, Mundo NFL. Since the start of the NFL/YouTube partnership, NFL content on YouTube has generated billions of views.

Additionally, as part of the agreement, YouTube and the NFL will facilitate exclusive access to official content and attendance opportunities for select YouTube Creators at key NFL tentpole events. YouTube is now also the presenting sponsor of both Back Together Saturday as well as NFL Kickoff Weekend. Back Together Saturday is the League’s official start to training camp when all 32 NFL clubs hold practices with club-led fan events. YouTube’s presenting sponsorship of NFL Kickoff Weekend marks the first time a League partner will have a presence from the kickoff of the season on Thursday night through the weekend games and Monday night.

In 2020, the NFL expanded its partnership with a carriage agreement to bring NFL Network and NFL RedZone to YouTube TV subscribers. Under the expanded relationship, the carriage agreement has been extended.

YouTube TV is a subscription streaming service that lets viewers watch live and on-demand TV from over 100 channels. Its cost per month before add-ons is currently $64.99. Viewers have access to local and national live sports, breaking news, shows, movies, and more, and can tune in on any screen (phone, tablet, TV, computer). The service has over five million subscribers, as of December 2022.

YouTube Primetime Channels is a new way for users to subscribe and watch content from their favorite streaming services right on the YouTube app. With over 30 channels, users can browse, sign up for, and watch their favorite shows, movies, sports, and more. With so many streaming options today, Primetime Channels makes it easier for viewers to watch their content in one place without having to jump from app to app, while also managing their subscriptions all in one place.

DirecTV currently has a $300 per season version of Sunday Ticket and a $400 version that features extra NFL-related content.

British superstar songstress Adele released her first new music in six years on Thursday (Oct. 14), with the debut song from her upcoming album “30” entitled “Easy On Me“. It’s the first original Adele tune to hit radio since 2016’s “Water Under The Bridge.”

“YouTube unveiled its slate of new and returning projects at the ninth-annual digital newfront, this year themed “Brandcast Delivered. Programming announcements include a new four-part docuseries following Demi Lovato as she continues her personal and musical journey; and renewals of YouTube originals “Instant Influencer with James Charles,” “The Creator Games Presented by MrBeast,” “A Heist With Markiplier,” and “Retro Tech.”

What follows is a listing of the upcoming new and returning YouTube Originals announced today:

Untitled Demi Lovato Project
YouTube is partnering with Demi Lovato on a four-part docuseries, a follow up to the 2017 YouTube Originals documentary, “Simply Complicated.” The series will follow Lovato returning to show fans her personal and musical journey over the past three years. More details to be revealed soon. The series is directed by Michael D. Ratner and produced by OBB Pictures.

“Instant Influencer with James Charles”
YouTube has ordered a second season of “Instant Influencer with James Charles.” In season one of YouTube’s first-ever beauty influencer competition series, contestants put their best makeup artistry, camera presence, and selling power on display for host, James Charles, and a mix of celebrity guest judges and well-seasoned beauty industry veterans including Norvina, Paris Hilton, and Trixie Mattel. The series is produced by Brian Graden Media.

“The Creator Games Presented by MrBeast”
YouTube has greenlit a second installment of “The Creator Games Presented by MrBeast.” This first-of-its-kind virtual livestream featured 32 of YouTube’s top creators including iJustine, Marques Brownlee and Jack Black. Hosted by MrBeast (37M Subscribers), the initial Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament raised over $1 million for COVID-19-related charitable organizations. The first installment of “The Creator Games Presented by MrBeast” was produced by Night Media and Fly on the Wall Productions.

Untitled Project With Markiplier
YouTube Originals has ordered another interactive special with YouTube Creator Markiplier. The new project follows the successful interactive special “A Heist With Markiplier” that allowed viewers to control their favorite YouTube Gamer’s life-or-death decisions in a classic museum heist and currently has over 18 million views. The interactive film is produced by Markiplier and Rooster Teeth Studios. Executive Producers Include Mark Fischbach, Matt Hullum, Will Hyde, and Ryan P. Hall

“Retro Tech”
YouTube Originals has ordered a second season of “Retro Tech” starring YouTube Creator Marques Brownlee. Each episode of the first season featured Marques examining a different nostalgic product – many of which he had never used – exploring the history, impact on society, and how each product defined pop culture and changed the world as we know it. In season two, Marques will explore the technological promises of the past. Futurists predicted that the tech of today would surround us with flying cars, robot maids, and teleportation. While some of these predictions are still sci-fi, others like mobile video calls, virtual reality, and even A.I. and quantum computers are quickly becoming a part of daily life. Marques will unravel these retro tech promises to see just how close we’ve come in 2020 and the direction revolutionary tech is headed next. “Retro Tech” is executive produced by Nick Budabin, Marty Moe and Chad Mumm for Vox Media Studios. Rachael Knudsen, Mark W. Olsen and Dana J. Olkkonen are co-executive producers for Vox Media Studios.

“UHC: Ultimate Home Championship” (Premieres June 26 on Stephen Curry’s YouTube channel)
Hosted by Stephen Curry, “Ultimate Home Championship” is a new virtual competition special that will feature notable YouTube creators, athletes and public figures including Von Miller, Lindsey Vonn, Ronda Rousey, DeAndre Jordan, Ryan García, The F2, Kristopher London, Katie Nolan, Ninja and Ego Nwodim. The competition, which is built around four, high-octane rounds of at-home events from a laundry hamper basketball to a DIY high jump, will raise funds for the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund with viewers encouraged to donate directly on the “Ultimate Home Championship” watch page. “Lockdown” (Premieres June 26 on YouTube Originals for Kids & Family Channel)
This new 10-episode scripted Kids & Families series follows six friends as they work together to solve a mystery in their neighborhood during the social distancing era. Shot entirely via webcam and smartphone from the actors’ homes and neighborhoods, “Lockdown” is among the first scripted live-action kids series to be fully developed and produced remotely, and received the Special Achievement Award for excellence in COVID-19 programming for Prix Jeunesse International, the global festival that every two years recognizes the best in children and youth television. The series is a suspenseful look at how young people stay in touch while having to stay away, and the story unfolds almost in real-time as the friend group works together – from a distance – to solve the mystery, while also exploring their own anxieties and frustrations about life during a pandemic. These announcements come on the heels of several recent YouTube Originals projects including “Bear Witness, Take Action” a conversation aimed to unite and inspire the platform’s global community to take action for racial justice hosted by Common and Keke Palmer featuring 50 YouTube creators, public figures and activists; as well as “Dear Class of 2020,” a tribute to this year’s graduating class and centered around the timely themes of hope, resilience, and camaraderie, featuring an inspirational send off from President and Mrs. Obama, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Lady Gaga, BTS, Liza Koshy and many more.

Upcoming YouTube Originals include season three of “Liza on Demand” starring Liza Koshy, “This is Paris,” a documentary uncovering the hidden past of international icon Paris Hilton, and a special live event with death-defying magician David Blaine.

With over 16 million subscribers to his channel, James Charles is best known for his creative makeup transformations which led to him being selected as the first male spokesperson for CoverGirl. Inspired by his artistry in the space, this series marks the first YouTube Originals beauty competition and will premiere on YouTube next year.

The logline: In this four part competition series brought to life by Brian Graden Media, contestants will put their best makeup artistry on display for Charles and a mix of celebrity guest judges as well as seasoned beauty industry veterans. Their work will be judged to see who has what it takes to be a top beauty influencer.

“Reality competition shows have always been a guilty pleasure of mine, and ever since I became a content creator on YouTube, it’s been one of my biggest dreams to create my own, said James Charles. “Beauty is such a major industry, and I’ve been lucky enough to grow a huge platform, but now I want to give back and share the knowledge I’ve gathered with others.
