In an effort to reclaim its No. 1 most-watched ranking in late night, NBC announced on Thursday (Aug. 8) that “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” will air on Sunday in late night for five times this fall, starting September 8. Those telecasts will follow “Sunday Night Football” and its subsequent late local news.

The first post-“Sunday Night Football” show on Sept. 8 follows a prime AFC match-up when the Pittsburgh Steelers visit the defending Super Bowl champions New England Patriots. Guests for the “The Tonight Show” telecast will include Jamie Foxx and Michael B. Jordan, who will promote their new film, “Just Mercy.” In addition, Kelly Clarkson will appear to discuss her latest project, the daytime series “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” and country singer Kane Brown will perform.

The other four “Tonight Show” Sunday telecasts are Oct. 6, 20, 27 and Dec. 1. Guests still to be determined for those dates.

Additionally, the show will broadcast an entire week live on Sept. 23-27, which is the opening week of the new fall season.

“The Tonight Show” tapes before a live studio audience from Studio 6B at 30 Rockefeller Center in New York City.

It was not all that impressive given the hype. But the series debut of “BH90210” on Fox topped this first Wednesday in August with a 3.3 rating/6 share in the household overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, this bested competing “Big Brother” on CBS (#2: 2.9/ 5) by 14 percent and it increased from lead-in “MasterChef” (#1: 2.9/ 6 at 8 p.m.) also by 14 percent. Since most new series drop 10 to 20 percent in week two, let’s see what happens next week…and beyond.

Also debuting last night were two series on The CW: Crime solver “Bulletproof” (#5: 0.7/ 1 at 8 p.m.) and reality hour “Hypnotize Me” (#5: 0.4/ 1 at 9 p.m.).

Wednesday, July 31, 2019

Household Rating/Share
Fox: 2.1/ 4, ABC and NBC: 2.0/ 4 each, CBS: 1.9/ 3, CW: 0.6/ 1

Percent Change From Year-Ago Evening:
ABC: +25, Fox: + 5, CW: -14, CBS: -24, NBC: -33

Ratings Breakdown:
“Jane the Virgin” on The CW concluded its series run with a 0.6 rating/1 share in the household overnights at 9 p.m., which was par for the course for a show that never resonated in the traditional ratings but had the critics commenting positively. An 8 p.m. special featuring cast members from “Jane the Virgin” also scored a 0.6/ 1. My hat is off, so to speak, to The CW for sticking with a show that truly deserved this five season run.

Elsewhere, “Big Brother” on CBS topped this lackluster final July Wednesday, with a 2.6/ 5 in the household overnights in the 9 p.m. hour. Comparably, that increased by 53 percent from lead-in “Love Island” (#4: 1.7/ 3 at 8 p.m.). I look forward to attending the live eviction show this evening!

ABC had nothing unusual to report care of game shows “Press Your Luck” (#2: 2.3/ 4 at 9 p.m.), “Card Sharks” (#3: 1.9/ 3 at 9 p.m.) and “Match Game” (#1: 2.0/ 4 at 10 p.m.). Ditto for Fox care of “MasterChef” (#1: 2.6/ 5) and “First Responders Live” (#4: 1.6/ 3 at 9 p.m.). And the remainder of the evening fared as follows:

8:00 p.m.
ABC – “Press Your Luck”: 2.3/ 4 (#2)
