The 2023 NBA Playoffs have arrived!

Eastern Conference

  • Last season, the Miami Heat achieved the No. 1 seed in the East entering that postseason. This season, they fell to Atlanta in its play-in opener, but defeated Chicago 102-91 on April 14 for its spot at the 8th seed. Miami faces Giannis Antetokounmpo and the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks. The Heat beat the Bucks in the 2020 playoffs. Milwaukee swept Miami in 2021.
  • The second-seeded Boston Celtics will play against the seventh-seeded Atlanta Hawks in their first-round playoff series. Boston swept all three meetings with Atlanta this season, but the Hawks were triumphant in six games when they last met in the postseason in 2016.
  • It’s the No. 3 seed Philadelphia 76ers versus the No. 6 Brooklyn Nets in an Eastern Conference first-round series. The Sixers swept four meetings this season after a 134-105 verdict on April 9. Philadelphia ousted Brooklyn 4-1 in the first round of the 2019 playoffs.
  • The fourth seed Cleveland Cavaliers and the fifth seed New York Knicks battle in their Eastern Conference first-round series. New York highly coveted former Utah star Donovan Mitchell in the offseason but he ultimately landed in Cleveland. However, New York’s offseason was far from being a disappointment; they scored one of their most successful free agent pickups in franchise history. former Dallas Mavericks point guard Jalen Brunson. Cleveland claimed the first meeting of the season, but New York countered by winning the next three, including 130-116 on March 31.

Western Conference

  • Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets led the West and will play eighth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves.
  • The No. 7 Los Angeles Lakers take on the No. 2 Memphis Grizzlies for their Western Conference quarterfinal. LeBron James netted 30 points as Los Angeles rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit to beat Minnesota 108-102 in overtime in the play-in tournament.
  • The Sacraments Kings play in the postseason for the first time since 2006 by facing the Warriors in their Western Conference first-round series. Five-time and defending champion Golden State has won nine of the last 11 meetings dating to 2020-21.
  • The Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Clippers are the 4-5 matchup of their Western Conference first-round series. L.A. seeks revenge after it was eliminated by Phoenix in the 2021 Western Conference finals in six games. Phoenix had acquired superstar Kevin Durant from Brooklyn in February. The road team won all four meetings this season.

TNT will present three Play-In games, First Round, Second Round and exclusive Eastern Conference Finals live game coverage, showcasing the most NBA Playoff game action of any network.

The 76ers and Knicks kick off the NBA’s Christmas Day slate with this contest at Madison Square Garden (ABC/ESPN, Dec. 25 @ 12:00 PM ET; broadcast team: Ryan Ruocco, JJ Redick, Cassidy Hubbarth). New York plays in its NBA-leading 55th Christmas game, with a 23-31 record entering this match. Philadelphia fell 106-104 to New York on Nov. 4.

The NBA’s Christmas Day slate resumes as the Mavericks host the Lakers (ABC/ESPN, Dec. 25 @ 2:30 PM ET; broadcast team: Dave Pasch, Hubie Brown, Monica McNutt). Dallas took four of the last five meetings, with Luka Doncic posting 29.5 points per game against Los Angeles in 2021-22. LeBron James netted 25 ppg versus the Mavs last season.

The Celtics and Bucks get together on Christmas Day in the first meeting between the East powers since the 2022 playoffs (ABC/ESPN, Dec. 25 @ 5:00 PM ET; broadcast team: Mark Jones, Doris Burke, Malika Andrews). Boston outlasted Milwaukee in seven games in the second round. The Bucks rallied to beat the Celtics 117-113 on Dec. 25, 2021.

The Warriors host Ja Morant and the Grizzlies for their first clash since their Western Conference second-round playoff series in May (ABC/ESPN, Dec. 25 @ 8:00 PM ET; broadcast team: Mike Breen, Mark Jackson, Jeff Van Gundy, Lisa Salters). Klay Thompson averaged 18.5 points per game for Golden State, and netted 30 in a decisive Game 6.

Two of Western Conference’s best, the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets</strong m> face off in the Mile High City (ABC/ESPN, Dec. 25 @ 10:30 PM ET; broadcast team: Beth Mowins, Richard Jefferson, Jorge Sedano). Nuggets guard Jamal Murray has returned after missing last season with a knee injury. While a bit inconsistent upon his return, he scored 30 in a Dec. 10 win over the Utah Jazz. He last faced the Suns on Jan. 23, 2021, when he scored 26 points in Denver’s double-overtime victory in Phoenix. Reigning two-time MVP Nikola Jokic (helping propel Denver to the top of the West standings so far this season) is almost averaging a triple-double, As for Phoenix, their biggest recent news was billionaire mortgage lender Mat Ishbia agreeing to purchase the Suns (and WNBA’s Mercury) for $4 billion. Its previous owner Robert Seaver came under scrutiny from alleged numerous instances of racism and misogyny throughout his 17-year stint with the Suns.

Turner Sports, entering its 38th consecutive year of NBA coverage, will feature a 65-game schedule during the 2021-22 NBA regular season, including a marquee Opening Night doubleheader, a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day doubleheader, regular doubleheader game coverage on Tuesdays and Thursdays (starting in January), and a prime time doubleheader to close out the regular season schedule, Sunday, April 10. The network will highlight the league’s biggest stars and most star-studded teams throughout the season, led by 13 appearances by the Los Angeles Lakers; 12 by the Golden State Warriors; 11 by the Brooklyn Nets; and 10 by the defending NBA Champion Milwaukee Bucks. Overall, TNT will televise doubleheaders on 18 Tuesdays, 12 Thursdays, MLK Day (Monday) and the regular season’s final day.

ESPN and ABC’s 101-game national television schedule for the 2021-22 regular season begins on Wednesday, October 20, and culminates on Sunday, April 10. NBA on TNT’s marquee Martin Luther King, Jr. Day doubleheader on Monday, Jan. 17, will be highlighted by a rematch of the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals – Bucks at Atlanta Hawks – at 6 p.m.  MLK Day game coverage will tip off with the Chicago Bulls and offseason additions DeMar DeRozan and Lonzo Ball visiting the Memphis Grizzlies and Ja Morant at 3:30 p.m.

As part of the league’s NBA 75 Classic Matchups highlighting the teams, players, coaches and moments that have defined the league, the Warriors and Curry will visit the Knicks and Walker, Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in a meeting of two franchises that have played in every NBA season.  The NBA and Turner Sports will be celebrating NBA 75 throughout the 2021-22 season.

NBA TV’s Summer League coverage – the first opportunity to see many of the NBA’s top rookies in action – will feature 50 live game telecasts in 13 days beginning Monday, July 1.

The network’s schedule – including live game telecasts from all three Summer League locations – will feature the expected first look at many of the 2019 NBA Draft class. Live game coverage on NBA TV will tip-off on July 1 with three games, including the Cleveland Cavaliers – who drafted Darius Garland with the No. 5 selection – facing the San Antonio Spurs and recently drafted Luka Samanic at 7 p.m.

Live event coverage will include 10 game telecasts from the Sacramento Kings’ California Classic Summer League and the 2019 Utah Jazz Summer League – five from each location – held from July 1-4. Golden 1 Center in Sacramento will host the California Classic Summer League, while the Utah Jazz Summer League games will be held at the team’s Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City. NBA TV will feature back-to-back tripleheader days of live game action from Sacramento and Utah on Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2, followed by a four-game slate on Wednesday, July 3. The network’s coverage will include the Miami Heat with No. 13 pick Tyler Herro in Sacramento, plus the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers in Salt Lake City. Live game coverage will tip off at 7 p.m., 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, and 3 p.m., 5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

The matchup between New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson and New York Knicks guard-forward RJ Barrett – two of the top three picks in NBA Draft 2019 presented by State Farm – highlights the 11-day, 83-game schedule for MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2019 in Las Vegas. Williamson and the Pelicans face Barrett and the Knicks on Friday, July 5 at 9:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Every MGM Resorts NBA Summer League game will air live on television for the second straight year, with ESPN networks and NBA TV combining to televise a record number of games.

Williamson, the No. 1 pick in NBA Draft 2019 presented by State Farm, returns on Saturday, July 6 to face Rui Hachimura and the Washington Wizards at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN. Hachimura became the first Japanese-born player selected in the first round by an NBA team when the Wizards picked him ninth in NBA Draft 2019.

Williamson will also take on the Chicago Bulls and fellow top-10 pick Coby White on Monday, July 8, at 9:30 p.m. on NBA TV.

MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2019, which features all 30 NBA teams and the Chinese and Croatian National Teams, will tip off with 10 games on July 5 and continue through Monday, July 15 at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The first day of action will include five games on NBA TV and a tripleheader on ESPN. This league provides fans the opportunity to see many of the league’s top young players, including this year’s top 10 picks Williamson, RJ Barrett, De’Andre Hunter, Jarrett Culver, White, Cam Reddish, Rui Hachimura and Jaxson Hayes.

The event opens with all 32 teams playing four preliminary games each. The top eight teams are then seeded in a tournament, which culminates with a Championship Game on July 15 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Teams that do not qualify for the tournament will each play a consolation game. Every team will play at least five games and as many as seven at MGM Resorts NBA Summer League.

Last year’s event, won by the Portland Trail Blazers, set records for total attendance, combined viewership across ESPN and NBA TV, and traffic to the NBA’s social and digital platforms, in addition to matching the single-day attendance record.

For the third consecutive year, ESPN will present every game from Las Vegas via the ESPN App, along with 43 games on its linear television networks (ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU).

NBA TV, co-managed by the NBA and Turner Sports, will air a record 40 games, beginning with the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League opener when the Croatian National Team, making its event debut, squares off against the Detroit Pistons and No. 15 pick Sekou Doumbouya on July 5 at 3 p.m. ET. NBA TV’s coverage of Day 1 will also feature a 5 p.m. ET game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Cleveland Cavaliers, who selected Darius Garland with the fifth pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Following that game, a 7 p.m. matchup between the Minnesota Timberwolves and No. 6 overall pick Jarrett Culver vs. the Dallas Mavericks

The Trail Blazers will begin defense of their MGM Resorts NBA Summer League title against the Pistons on July 6 at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU. Later that day, the Atlanta Hawks, who selected Cam Reddish the 10th pick in NBA Draft 2019 presented by State Farm, will play the Milwaukee Bucks at 5 p.m. ET on NBA TV.

NBA TV’s on-site commentators in Las Vegas will include analysts Brendan Haywood, Caron Butler, Steve Smith, Isiah Thomas, Sam Mitchell and eight-time NBA All-Star Vince Carter, who will serve as a guest analyst for the network for the fourth straight year. Matt Winer, Rick Kamla, Pete Pranica, Kristen Ledlow and Jared Greenberg will share play-by-play responsibilities. Allie LaForce, Dennis Scott, Stephanie Ready, Ro Parrish, Ledlow and Greenberg will serve as reporters.

NBA TV’s signature studio show, NBA GameTime, will feature live episodes following each day’s last game of the night, July 5-15, focusing on the latest player moves and free agent buzz, plus game highlights and news from Summer League. Casey Stern, Winer, Kamla and Chris Miles will rotate hosting duties, alongside analysts Wes Wilcox, Tony Delk, Rex Chapman and Antonio Daniels.

The 2019 NBA Playoffs have arrived!

Starting April 13, sixteen teams — eight from each the Eastern and Western conferences — will begin their route for the NBA championship and the coveted Larry O’Brien trophy, to be rewarded in June.

There will be one notable absence from this year’s playoffs: LeBron James, now part of the underwhelming Los Angeles Lakers after eight consecutive NBA Finals appearances with the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers.

It already has been an historic season for the Milwaukee Bucks franchise. They achieved the season’s best record in the NBA (with 60 wins and 22 losses), the first time they’ve done so since 1973–74. I’m addition, the Bucks earned their first 60-win season since 1980–81, with much thanks to league MVP candidates Giannis Antetokounmpo aka “The Greek Freak”.

The team for the entire league to beat is still the Golden State Warriors, winners of three of the last four NBA championships.

ABC, TNT, ESPN, ESPN2 and NBA TV are the national television outlets for the NBA playoffs.
